Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz, is a story centered on a young man called Galen Bray who was said to be fortunate to be able to inherit his great uncle's property and business, and to also escape a warzone, the Land of the Princes! This book is an opener to a series, and so, it contains a lot of background details about a kingdom called Voulhire, its states, citizens, and history. Characters of different shapes and sizes were unveiled with perfect descriptive, explanatory and creative presentation. An understanding of the kind of kingdom that Voulhire was, was being created by the writer of this book. The book started with a narrative of a beautiful kingdom ruled by a king named Wilhelm; and goes on and on to talk about each important character with each chapter expounding and narrating what their roles were and creating a space for guessing and suspense, placing more focus on Galen Bray, whose future was not yet spelled out in this book; and ends with a climax, and an alarm for a war, a problem or peace, or, a hope and a lingering but uncertain thoughts of the beginning of another adventure for Galen and the kingdom of Voulhire!
This book is a breathtaking book that needs a lot of imaginative powers to be understood. In essence, this book found its way back to the middle ages, of which a 21st century individual would not be able to visualize all the details contained by the scenes in this story properly. However, this seemingly misty problem was solved by Matthew Tysz. He exercised enormous effort in creating an atmosphere that would help the reader visualize and catch-up with everything in this book. I would say, this is the most positive thing I can say about this book. Without forgetting all the other unflinching efforts that Matthew Tysz put into creating every character, as if they were real, of which they are, in the story of course! The writer took time to describe some individuals called mages, who could wield magical powers effortlessly. I could relate with how they wielded magical powers as if I was there with them on the scenes. Certainly, this book was exceptionally edited and carefully written!
However, scenes where mages fought with magical powers, especially at the return of a mage called Meldorath, were not explained enough with simplest words that could make the reader grasp an understanding of the scenes easily, especially readers who have never witnessed magical powers being wielded before. Even though this sounds like a vicious comment, it doesn't affect the sweetness of this book, as those scenes were not common.
Definitely, I can never forget how the last pages of this book made me crave for more of it. And I ended the book vowing to myself that I would read the series through. Out of this hunger colored with excitement, I give this book five out of five stars!
I hereby recommend this book for every student of history who wants to know what the middle ages were like, lovers of science fiction and fantasy, and everyone who wants to see, of course through books, how magical powers are wielded!
