Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz tells the story of the kingdom, where feuds and brutal struggles for power collide with friendship and love. The narrative in the book begins against the backdrop of two significant events. Galen Bray, one of the main characters, flees the flames of battle and seeks safety in Voulhire- its fragile peace and stability will easily deceive a visitor. In the meantime, evil forces utilize magic to attack Voulhire and create internal chaos.
There is some background information about the author at the beginning, and I must say that it had a positive impact on me. The author disclosed some highly personal details to the reader, which the keen eye will detect. There is also a list of characters and brief information, which is very useful. Furthermore, chapters allow us to see events through the eyes of the protagonists, helping us to follow the storyline objectively.
The storyline is quite complex; the book also features several characters with similar names, which was confusing at first. This fact can be viewed from both positive and negative perspectives. The action takes place in a completely new world that has its own rules. The reader should become familiar with these rules and adjust organically, as the author managed to do so. Furthermore, the language has an unusual tone that is pretty fitting for the environment, though it takes some time for the reader to adapt. I believe the number of characters is also tied to the fact that the book is a part of an ongoing series, and if any character appears needless in this chapter, this fact may alter. Ultimately, for the reader who just wants to enjoy reading a fantasy thriller, the book's complexity can be a little exhausting. However, it will be a delightful read for those who enjoy a complicated tale.
Another detail I noticed was the book cover. Similar hues merge seamlessly, and the illustration may represent the fall or reunification of the nation; perhaps the creator left it up to the reader to decide. The book has a philosophical tone as well. When attempting to establish a utopian environment, one is prone to falling into the clutches of dystopia. The characters' dialogs are thought-provoking, with deep content concerning evil and good, the essence of existence, and other philosophical themes.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars since I did not see any reason to give it a lower rating. I was not uncomfortable with the multitude of characters and the tangled plot. The storyline is smooth and well thought out. The book is professionally-edited because I found two errors. I recommend the book not only to fantasy lovers but also to those who love philosophical books. Based on its content, the book is better suited for an adult audience.
