Review of In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N)
In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N) by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes is a non-fiction philosophy book that seeks to help readers identify the need for consciousness and inner peace. This book also contains steps readers can take to obtain self-realization and spiritual liberation. The author theorizes that all people have two "you's," the "false egotistical you" and the "real you." Hughes writes to the "real you," that which can put aside ego and hatred to find commonality with the universe and everything within. As the title suggests, the ultimate goal of this book is to help readers bring kindness to others and themselves.
I enjoyed the organization of this book. The author discussed the issues humanity faces, the concept of consciousness, and the need for inner peace. Finally, he identifies steps to obtain this self-realization and peace. The author's step-like organization helped me keep the topics straight and relate to each new theory. The author loaded this book with knowledge. I re-read this book a second time and found another few nuggets of wisdom I would like to apply to my life.
I found nothing to dislike about this book. I don't typically read non-fiction books, especially on topics of philosophy. After reading this book, I should change that practice. I was initially confused by the concept that discusses seeing others around you as the same conscious soul as yourself. However, after re-reading this chapter, I realized the profoundness of these words. Absolute kindness comes from treating others like you would treat your future self. Act no differently to your kindly neighbor, the annoying customer at your job, or the rude person that cut you off on the road. Everyone is connected, and harsh treatment of others equates to treating your future self with hatred.
I rate In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N) 5 out of 5 stars. This book is professionally edited and has layer upon layer of meaning. I found only one minor formatting error in the editorial praise before the table of contents. This error did not affect my rating. The author's use of examples and synonyms helped me understand his complex theories and discussions. I found a deeper understanding of consciousness and inner peace that I had not considered before reading this book. Hughes also utilizes humor to break up the seriousness of the topics within his book, a practice that I found refreshing.
I recommend this book to readers interested in philosophy, as the author lays a roadmap to deep inner peace. The author brilliantly wrote this book for readers of all religions or non-religion. The author uses inclusive language while navigating his theories. I caution young readers due to discussions of societal injustices, such as starvation, addiction, violence, and sexual assault.
