In Dying Well, Susan Ducharme Hoben captures the memoir of her husband in a loving novel that follows his battle with cancer and enjoyment through life. She writes about how her husband, Bruce, and her embrace their new reality through difficult decision-making. This novel starts eight years in the past when she addresses her victory over cancer and as a result the two learned to live life to the fullest. Through tearful flashbacks of the life the two built together, the author provides advice on how to live with no regrets, by accepting reality and changing one’s attitude towards it.

The readers are taken on the adventure that was Bruce Hoben’s journey through cancer. From visiting medical professionals to being surrounded by family to remission to new life to recurrent cancer to more milestones towards death and finally to celebrate the life of the now deceased Bruce Hoben. Learn more about this heart-tugging story of placing hope in living a happy life rather than surviving longer by reading the emotion-provoking novel that Susan Ducharme Hoben wrote, Dying Well.

Without a doubt, this tearful book has many positive aspects that make this novel worth reading. In this novel, there are many flashbacks made which build the character of Bruce and allow the reader to understand the severity of his departure. After reading this book I was brought to tears and was glad to have been able to read of the compassionate Bruce Hoben's journey through life. Another aspect of the book I enjoyed is the advice the author provides for the reader to live a fulfilling life. One lesson that I know will be permanently engraved in my mind is how we constantly miss the present due to thinking of the unchangeable past and the uncontrollable future. By the author incorporating historical events, the passage of time is felt and the reader can connect this story to real events, this is seen through Obama being elected president to mentions of 9/11.

This book is truly magnificent and with that being said, there is nothing I can note as a negative aspect. Because of the enjoyment I received from reading this eye-opening novel I gladly rate this book five out of five stars. The reason for this perfect score is due to there being no negative aspects and because of how inspirational the author’s words were.

I happily recommend this tear-provoking book to those who enjoy non-fiction novels, more specifically to those who have experienced losing a loved one or to those who feel directionless in life. Because I can guarantee that after reading this book a new sense of purpose and understanding of the world will be proudly found.
