Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill, what a book! Kim is the main protagonist. Kim lives a pretty monotonous life; she goes to work in the lower levels of a high-level AI department. She is fascinated with the thought of working with them, but it's been five years and it's become a bit repetitive. Liquor every night before she goes to bed to try to push away the demons that keep her up through the night called nightmares. It starts out with a small description of how bad her life is. Wakes at the usual time, always has a usual headache. Why would someone that is happy usually have a headache? As the book goes on you see plenty of things going right and wrong in her life. Gets a promotion, loses her promotion, gets a new place, loses new place. The roller coaster of this book is astonishing. While Kim is dealing with her personal demons her time to become one is coming up during her new AI assignment. She now has to find a way to make her life right or suffer the consequences and these consequences are way too large to avoid with a bottle of vodka.
There are many aspects to this book, some being positive and some being negative. Some positive aspects are the fact that there is little worry outside of work. Your house is taken care of by a housebot, your meals come from a sentient fridge that may have your best interests in mind and there's Virtual Reality where you can be everywhere from the comfort of your home! That is fantastic!
There are some negative aspects as well. There is absolutely no privacy, the AI's are literally everywhere and watch your every movement and control your daily life. While they do have your best interests at heart, they can't be too trusted as they don't have the feelings that we humans have so they can't make the right moves that we would make.
My rating for this is extremely high! 4 out of 4 stars are just the minimum I would give to this book. It was well written, suspenseful, the pace was a little slow but once you get into the actual storyline it is definitely a page turner. It took me a couple of days to get to the actual storyline but once that happened, I was complete in hours! I would recommend this to people who are into science fiction and suspenseful stories. It's so well put together and the things that happen are very serious and could very well happen in this day and age with how technology is going. I rate this 4 out of 5 stars. Fantastic book and I would love to read more from this author.
