Similar to the plot of Steven Schwartz’s musical “Wicked,” Lydia Drace’s “The Morningstar Diaries, Volume 1” takes a character many view as inherently evil, namely Lucifer the devil, and shows another side of him that we might not have considered before. When Ava Morningstar learns that Abbadon, a demon from the underworld, has escaped, her life is turned upside down. Her husband Lucifer, King of Hell and servant of God, swears he will do everything within his power to protect her, but Ava is worried. Abbadon knows that Ava is tied to Lucifer’s soul and if he succeeds in murdering Ava, the weaker of the two, Lucifer, too, will also die.

Though the fictional plot line of the book is an unusual one, painting Lucifer in a favorable light, there were many errors throughout the book that kept me from believing in the author’s credibility. Typographical errors were too numerous to count, including spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors. There were also parts of the book that were played off as factual, but upon further investigation proved to be incorrect, such as the author’s reference to Christianity in Southeast Asia, “Most people in Asia don’t believe that Father (God) even exists.” When in actuality, there are some countries in Asia that are predominantly Christian, including the Philippines which is 86% Roman Catholic.

At times the book is a fast read, with plot twists that keep the reader on their toes, eager to read more to find out what is coming next. But though the plot can be entertaining, leaving you on the edge of your seat, with time ticking by unnoticed, the plot can also be slow and dragging, especially as characters are explaining their past to each other in what is a deliberate attempt to develop characterization.

The slow plot was further accentuated by the abrupt ending. I expected Ava, the main character, to go through some kind of character development or for parts of the plot to come to a conclusion. Instead the final words of the book didn’t leave me begging for more, they just left me confused. It is clear that the author’s intention was to use a cliffhanger to propel the reader into the next novel in the series, but instead I was offended at the lack of conclusion of any kind and would not go out of my way to find the sequel to this book.

Overall I would give this book 1 out of 4 stars. There were many errors that distracted my reading and halts in the plot that did not help to develop the story. Though the author’s idea was a unique and interesting one, I found the plot to be slow and at times aimless. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t mind typographical errors and instead is more interested in a unique, imaginative plot line
