When expecting a baby, all the attention is given to the pregnant partner. While this is essential, another important yet overlooked part is the father. The process will not be as easy or successful if the father doesn't know what he is supposed to be doing during this stage. The First Time Father by Thomas Alfie is a guide to everything that an expecting father should be doing during the pregnancy stage, the baby's delivery stage, and the period that comes right after it.

Instructions for diaper changing, formulas, food, packing the hospital bag, putting a baby to sleep, and many other tips related to the newborn are discussed in the book. However, the larger part discusses instructions for dealing with the pregnant wife. This characteristic of the book is what I liked the most about The First Time Father. Thomas Alfie, the author, included all the details that fathers-to-be might have questions about. I also liked that a heading preceded each section to inform the reader about the topic to be discussed. These headings help with organizing thoughts and make it easier to navigate through the pages, especially if the reader is revisiting the book and looking for a specific topic.

Other than the few instances where the author makes a generalization about pregnant women, which may or may not be correct, there's nothing in the book that I think needs improvement. I don't believe all women experience pregnancy cravings, illnesses, or mood swings the same way. I also believe the author based his generalizations on his personal experience with his wife. That's why I think this point could be modified, but it doesn't affect my rating as it is a minimal observation.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. I found the content to be informative and adequate. The conversational writing style made the reading experience fun and easy. The text itself seems to have been professionally edited. I only found two very minor errors.

I recommend The First Time Father to couples who are expecting a baby soon. Whether it is the different kinds of baby poop, stages of delivery, or types of insurance, you'll find it here. However, I should draw attention to the fact that this book is more like a conversation with an experienced father of three. It covers most of the topics related to pregnancy, but it doesn't tackle a specific topic in depth. So, if you are looking for a guide to a particular problem you're facing, I suggest you look for another book that highlights it.
