Review of In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N)
In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes is a book that constantly shows its readers love and empathy. It urges you to feel and exhibit that same kind of great love for all of humankind, including yourself. A book full of positivity and emotional truths, Eckhart Aurelius Hughes seems to have written this book as a way to hold your hand and tell you that we'll figure it all out, together.
The book has a very clean layout, with a helpful table of contents that will help readers find chapters easily when they want to reread their favorite quotes. Chapters are interspersed with thought-provoking quotes and questions posed by the author to set the reader up for the content of the next chapter. Many questions or quotes are like little mind puzzles, little philosophical nuggets for your brain to chew on long after you've finished the book. Much of the book is rooted in philosophy, but the content is presented in an interesting and digestible way so that readers should not feel it too advanced to understand. In fact, author Eckhart Aurelius Hughes presents philosophical content in a way that just about anyone should be able to apply to their own lives and understand at a base level.
If you're someone who carries regrets, wishes things were different, or desires a deeper connection with others and your inner self, this is the kind of book that will help you deal with those feelings. If you believe that all humans go through the same struggles and desire the same things in life, you'll feel very reinforced in that belief after reading In It Together. As this book is all about learning how to love yourself, cynical readers will likely find this book as fodder for their jokes. As the book draws scientific points but the book's focus is not directly based in science, it may lose credibility with some readers. It often feels much more spiritual and philosophical, with scientific examples to back it up.
I can imagine parents giving this book to their children when they reach young adulthood, which is often a tumultuous time in people's lives. In general, this would make a thoughtful gift to any family member as a simple way to show you care. I would be careful not to tell someone who dismisses self-help books as sappy to read this book, however, as this certainly would set them off further.
As the book itself states, it seeks to save without imposing and seeks to free without infringing. I did find this to be an accurate self-description. Never did I feel the author's tone too controlling or dictational. Instead, I felt Eckhart Aurelius Hughes posed big questions and scenarios for me to think about on my own terms, to draw my own conclusions. What makes us human? What does it even mean to be human? These kinds of questions are discussed somewhat scientifically and philosophically throughout the book, but not necessarily to tell us the answers. Instead, it serves to help the reader discover personal meaning and self-awareness. I would rate this book as 5 out of 5 stars, as the writing and content exceeded my expectations and actually did help me change my perspective. For such a rare experience, I must say that this book truly deserves my highest praise.
