We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a magic realism book set in a typical fantasy-novel setting, namely the epic kingdom of Voulhire. This story includes mentions of socioeconomic turmoil, political powerplay, war, and various magical characters. The tale begins with a young man, Bray Galen, who receives the opportunity to leave the Land of Princes, as his uncle expected him in the city of Magnum Caelum, in Voulhire. He was lucky, as his homeland was militarily conflictual with its neighbors, and life was harsh. Unfortunately, Bray reaches Voulhire after his uncle passes, so he inherits his uncle's forge business. Read along to find out how each city plays into political games full of elements like assassination, siege, and war.

I have enjoyed this book, despite its complexity. It is not easy to read, but it is worth it. One of the aspects I liked was how the author chose to name his multitude of characters. I could distinguish a familiarity between the construction of all their names, which offered the macrocosm an air of veridicality. Similarly, the way Matthew Tysz created the characters layer by layer was both intriguing and captivating. Most characters possess a form of supernatural abilities, yet the story is not only focused on the dynamic of said abilities. The plot revolves around the context of Voulhire, and the author lays the foundation for the rest of the series; the reader is now curious about what is in the next book. Moreover, I appreciated the narration, which cued the reader in on the characters' intentions or personalities. I feel that the glossary at the back is another positive aspect as it is easy to lose oneself through the details and a written explanation does seem to help.

In terms of negative aspects, I did not like the vulgar words used in some of the dialogs. I feel that this was unnecessary, yet I cannot didact a star out of my rating for this.

I found no grammatical errors or typos, so one could see this book was professionally edited. I enjoyed this book wholeheartedly, as I am a fantasy novel fan, so I give it 5 out of 5 stars. The book ends abruptly, so I am looking forward to reading the next one.

Recommending this book is a bit difficult because of the complexity and the political and socio-economical concepts at play. Adults, especially science-fiction or fantasy fans, will enjoy this. I would also recommend it to young adults with political knowledge.
