Review of Terms of Service
Craig W. Stanfill's Terms of Service is the debut installment in the AI Dystopia series. set in a future where corporations and a morally corrupt social movement exert complete control, dictating the lives of citizens such as protagonist Kim, an employee of an AI company, who helps enforce strict laws and monitor those who deviate from the norm. However, when she and her childhood friend Shan embark on a misadventure, she is selected to be the creator of an AI named Kimberly and discovers shocking truths about the society she inhabits. This prompts her to question whether to conform or dare to be different.
The novel is both thrilling and thought-provoking, inviting readers to imagine what life would be like in such a world. The author's writing style is straightforward, making it accessible to a wider audience, including those who may not typically enjoy science fiction. The characters are well-developed, with Kim as the main narrator, but others play important roles in advancing the plot. The author breaks from tradition by using unique titles for the days of the week, adding to the novel's appeal. Overall, this book is a well-crafted masterpiece that is sure to keep readers engaged.
The settings in this book were fitting for the story's setting. The author created a unique world where AI controls the lives of its inhabitants, strict adherence to rules is expected, and deviations result in punishment. The portrayal of a potential future society was intriguing. The characters were well-developed, which made me feel a strong connection to the book. The climaxes, such as the city of ruins encounter, the vagrant, and the blanks, were thrilling. The addition of intimate scenes added flavor to the novel.
While the book does contain scenes with adult content, they are not overly explicit and fit within the context of the story. However, one area for improvement could be more clarification in the introduction about the history and creation of the AIs, when they took control, the reasons behind their creation, and who was responsible for their implementation into society. However, this won't affect my rating for this book. I would give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading science fiction that also contains thrillers and suspense. I would also recommend this book to all scientists and technologists who believe in the future of their profession. The book is error-free.
