Review of Full Contact: Collected
Have you ever been so confident in what you do for work, but when it comes to the outside world, you are completely unsure and uncertain? In this amazing book by Daniel Kucan, we follow short stories regarding Zach. His life hasn’t been easy. He has always been big and knew how to fight, how to win, and how to take a few shots. While he is in the ring, he knows what to do, and he can instantly read his opponent’s body language. When it comes to the real world, he struggles to communicate, is constantly plagued with questions, and is unsure about himself in all aspects. As he is a big guy, he doesn’t always get the best reactions out of the people around him, which tends to escalate the scenarios in an unwanted way. In this book, we jump to different times in Zach’s life and see how the situations formed the man he is.
This book pulled me in from the start, and although the stories weren’t in chronological order, they made sense due to what led to that particular time jump. I also learned that stories always have a way of catching up with you, even years later, and that the stories we tell aren’t always all true. I believe there is a lot to learn from this book, especially on how to handle situations when you don’t have the best communication skills. It is also a great skill set to learn from a young age: when something doesn’t feel completely right, to get away instead of just following others. The sixth sense we have is there for a reason and keeps us safer than we realize. There is a sentence that stood out to me and made me think about it quite a lot on location 1056 of 1913 in this book: "Mmmm. ‘Win.’ Funny Word. Mean different things to different people."
This book was thought-provoking throughout, and every short story had a type of lesson for me. The fights were very well described and made you feel like you were the one fighting instead of just looking in. I enjoyed the first-person narrative as you heard Zach’s personal feelings and reasoning. The author did an amazing job with Zach’s expressions, as it felt like he was personally speaking to me when telling his stories. He kept referring to the reader as "kid," which gave the book a personal aspect and made you feel included in these stories. I enjoyed the jumps between the different short stories of Zach’s life, the fights he was a part of, and his philosophical wanderings about life, decisions, people, etc. Each story was action-packed and fast-paced. You never know what you are going to read or what is behind the next bend. As I mentioned before, it truly felt like I was a part of Zach’s life while reading.
I only found three small errors in this book, which leads me to believe that it has been professionally edited. There were quite a few non-borderline profanities, but they suited the stories completely. I would rate Full Contact: Collected by Daniel Kucan, a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. There was no reason to deduct any points, and these stories will stay with me for quite some time still. The stories felt very honest and open, which made this book relatable and like true stories. I enjoyed everything about this book.
I would recommend this book to lovers of MMA fights and also to readers who enjoy a fast-paced, action-packed, and relatable book that questions life. In this book, you will find so much more than only fights and philosophical questions. You will also find love, friendship, loyalty, wrong decisions, and a rollercoaster of emotions.
