What is power? Is it the ability to give orders from a throne? Is it the ability to wield forces unknown to this world, the ability to be feared rather than respected, or a bit of both? We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz gives us insight into all these questions.

Voulhire, a land ruled by King Wilhelm Arcolo, cowers at the name of Lord Meldorath, a powerful mage seeking entrance into the magical realm. Eldus Alderman, the new lord of Hillport, was sent by King Wilhelm to make Hillport forget about its ugly past. Eldus is not only interested in making Hillport forget its past; he also wants to renovate the whole town and bring economic developments to the town, so it could rival other towns in economic success. While all these politics unravel, we get to know the story of Galen Bray, an immigrant from the land of princes, a war zone. Galen arrives willingly to claim the inheritance left for him by his uncle. He meets Rowan, who helps him navigate his way around Voulhire and find his true purpose.

Right from the start of the book, from the map of Voulhire to the prologue, I knew I was in for a ride. Thanks to that map, the author was able to create a world that would stick in my mind. There are so many things to like about this book. I loved the fact that the book had a theme of sci-fi and magic, and the words chosen by the author to inculcate these themes in the book were exceptionally perfect; his words were able to paint a beautiful picture in my head while I got entertained with the action. I also loved that all the characters had their time and chapters. Although the lead character was obvious, it didn't stop the author from assigning chapters to other characters, giving them a good introduction as this is only the first book of the series.

I didn't find anything to dislike about this book. The author's choice of diction was perfect, and the suspense between the chapters was entertaining. I look forward to reading other books in the franchise.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The author wrote a book with a crafty plot. There are no errors in this book; it has been properly edited. I recommend this book to fans of sci-fi and magic-themed books. I recommend this book to people who have a wild imagination and would like to venture into another realm.
