Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in a fantasy-novel series called We are Voulhire. In this book, Matthew Tysz portrays a new world known as Voulhire, where the storyline unfolds. The book is told from different characters' perspectives showcasing the beginning of the end of a golden age in Voulhire. Voulhire is described as a country that has had prosperity and has grown for generations with no real threat. However, that is soon to change, and the author eases us into how and when as the book's mystery unravels.
The book is well-written and articulated. The book has a series of seemingly intermittent scenes that all come together beautifully as the book progresses. These scenes seem unrelated at first; however, they have been spun artfully and with a concise effort to bring the beautifully described land of Voulhire to life along with its culture, people, cities, and towns. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the world of Voulhire, especially since each town and city had its unique character and ambiance. Matthew Tysz has filled the book with humor which dilutes some of the grotesque scenes incorporated in the book.
I loved the characterization in the book. It was clear that the author took his time to create each character, from the intellectual, easy-going, and funny Lord Eldus Alderman, to the powerful and mysterious Lord Meldorath, to the honest and cautious King Wilhelm, among many other intriguing characters. My favorite character besides Lord Eldus is Galen Bray, a refugee from the war-torn Land of Princes. Galen presents a fresh perspective into the land of Voulhire that its residents overlook because he comes from the Land of the Princes. Another aspect I loved about the book is the fact that the author helpfully provides a glossary at the end of the book to help with
From chapter to chapter, the book had me engrossed. I would recommend this book to readers who love fantasy novels. The book also features magic and a magical world he refers to as Caromentis, I would, therefore, not recommend it to readers who do not like books with magic. The book also contains grotesque descriptions of blood and death hence, I would not recommend it to young readers.
Given all of the above, I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Additionally, I believe the book was professionally edited since I did not find any errors in it.
