Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first book in Matthew Tysz's We are Voulhire series. It is a fantasy novel about the co-existence of the natural and supernatural worlds. The story begins with the introduction of the Land of Princes, in which Galen Bray flees to the kingdom of Voulhire to escape the war-torn land. To prevent his sons from vying for his throne, the Emperor of Lullabies gifted four islands to each of them. This caused a civil war between the brothers and an endless cycle of suffering for the common people. Our protagonist, Galen Bray, takes us on a journey in the hopes of running into his uncle in a small town called Magnum Caelum in the kingdom of Voulhire. Galen was, alas, informed of his uncle's passing. He did, however, inherit his uncle's fortune. Galen's life was going well so far, as he had been granted the citizenship of Voulhire. Nevertheless, a sinister stream rushed beneath Voulhire's serene exterior. Will Galen be able to confront the secrets?
Readers can empathize with Matthew Tysz's characters and their surroundings because of the way he utilizes words. I was so engrossed in the story that I had the impression that Galen and Rowan were guiding me through the events in Voulhire. The author provided a literal and figurative map of Voulhire, which shows his exceptional creativity in world-building. The plot kept expanding with the introduction of new characters, yet rather than feeling chaotic, everything was tightly related. The two co-existing universes, Cosmos and Caromentis, were imagined in incredible detail by Mr. Tysz. Galen's development from a desperate boy to a bright young man who welcomed both the good and the bad with kindness allowed us to witness his growth as well.
I adore Galen Bray in particular. Galen is an honest young man, unlike the typical protagonists who exhibit heroic traits. I want to tuck him away in my pocket and protect him from the bad things in the world. Galen is too adorable for words. The visual map Mr. Tysz included at the start of the book is another wonderful touch. It makes it easier for readers to understand how far away a location is and where the characters are headed. The events of the novel are shown from several viewpoints, demonstrating how they are unfolding throughout Voulhire. Matthew Tysz also has a website dedicated to the We Are Voulhire series, where he discusses it in depth. Don't forget to look it up!
There is nothing about this wonderful book that I dislike. I liked both the perfect and faulty elements of the book. Yet, I must draw attention to the author's offensive usage of explicit jokes about women in this work. Nonetheless, I will pardon the author because later on, we will encounter a really powerful female character. Apart from that, I don't have any objections.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The book was well-written and well-edited. I discovered no errors. This book deserves a perfect rating, and I can't wait to see Galen and Meldorath again in the next installment. I recommend this book to avid fantasy readers. Specifically, for the young adult audience, because explicit jokes and profanity are not appropriate for teenagers under the age of sixteen.
