Journalist Clare Philips and Father Daniel Harrison are on one of their usual excursions around Rome, exploring all kinds of ancient sites. They learned this was a common interest of theirs after meeting in their apartment building a few years earlier. It seems this is a typical trip for them until Clare stumbles upon a severed ear in an Etruscan cave. From there, the audience is thrown into a story complete with danger, corrupt politicians, and a surprising amount of kidnapping.

Deadline Rome: The Vatican Kylix written by the talented Sari Gilbert is an incredibly entertaining account of 1980s Italy. She writes with so much detail that it is easy to feel as though you are experiencing these characters’ lives firsthand. It is an incredible novel.

I found that I enjoyed how the author introduced new characters, managing to do it in a way that almost lets the audience know how important they’ll be in the story. An example of this is the introduction of Silvano. The audience hears about him before meeting him, making the character feel quite ominous and almost dangerous. I very much enjoyed the suspense it provided.

The author uses quite a bit of Italian throughout the novel, so I found myself having to look up a few words during my time reading. However, instead of this feeling like a task, I found it quite fun, as I was able to learn a few new words in a language I had never really been exposed to before. This added to my enjoyment immensely. Along with this, I found the story to be exceptionally well-paced.

A slight issue I had with the book was the fact that many of the sentences felt overly wordy and long. It made it slightly difficult for me to fully immerse myself in the book. I also noticed that the book could do with another round of editing, as I found two very minor errors. Unfortunately, for these reasons, I will have to deduct a point from my score. However, I very much enjoyed my time reading this unique story and would love to read anything else this author comes out with. For the reasons mentioned above, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy some very suspenseful novels. Not only was this exciting to read, but the 1980s Italian setting made it rather unique, leading me to believe that readers who typically enjoy that type of theme would love this book. It would be far better suited to mature readers, as there are quite a few instances of strong profanity throughout, as well as some minor sexual themes.
