Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy novel. The novel is told from the viewpoints of different people some of whom are Galen Bray who escaped a terrible war with the help of his uncle and hopes to continue his uncle's legacy as a blacksmith. There is King Wilhelm II, the current king of the vast kingdom of Voulhire who is burdened with keeping the kingdom prosperous yet safe from its enemies such as the Riva Rohavi and his one-time friend Lord Meldorath, a great wizard who the king could only capture and imprison but not kill. The King also has to contend with his chancellor Midius Maido who seeks to undermine him at every turn. Several other characters such as Rowan, who is Galen's companion, and Lord Eldus Alderman the astute judge posted to Hillport to improve and develop it. Many other characters alongside the aforementioned join to make this a suspense-filled novel, as magical as it is mysterious.
There are so many things to love about the novel, one of which is the point of view it employs. By telling the story from the viewpoint of multiple characters, we can get an overview of the vast kingdom of Voulhire and the events occurring in multiple parts leading to a well-rounded story. We even get the views of lesser characters in the novel such as Maido, Vidius Crodai, Alabaster, and even Meldorath himself. The second point draws heavily from the first, the novel has exquisite character development. Due to the multiple points of view used to tell the story, we come to understand the characters a lot better, we see their motivations and get more familiar with them. For example, we find that Galen is not just some fortunate man that escaped the war of the princes, he is also a gifted blacksmith as well as a very kind human and will most likely be a very important factor in the brewing war and future of the kingdom. We understand that the Riva Rohavi are not just raiding and terrterrorizinglhire for the fun of it but are enemies of the kingdom because of the wring and brutal killings done to their forefathers under the reign of King Saint Idus. Another brilliant aspect of the novel is the mystery it holds, it keeps the reader guessing even at the end, the biggest example of this is Meldorath, as it becomes blurry as to whether he is truly evil or if all the terrible things he has done we're to protect the kingdom a greater evil and he was wrongfully imprisoned. Also, the magical universe of Caromentis raises a ton of questions with all we about it being that it contains multiple universes and that magic flows from it, and that it is where Beth comes from. Finally, the plot is masterful as despite the story being told from multiple perspectives, we can see that they are all flowing towards a common direction and that they will all connect and no detail is wasted. In addition to all of these, the book is brilliantly edited, with no errors in the work.
There are no things I dislike in the book, it has a brilliant plot, very good character development, a lovely mode of storytelling, suspense, and mystery, and on top of all that, it is professionally edited. Honestly, one can't ask for more, it ticks all the boxes, kudos to Mr. Tysz.
I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars and 5 out of 5 stars, it is a gorgeous work of literature that perfectly sets up its sequel and has no errors. It deserves to get the highest rating there is. I don't usually give a perfect rating but this one deserves it.
I recommend this to everyone who loves works of mystery, fantasy, and thrillers. This set of people will especially enjoy this book. Also whoever just loves well-written works of literature will enjoy the book.
