Review of The Cancer Couple
Mike and Barb moved from Illinois to Florida to have a different life setting. Barb got a job in Florida, where she was hired to direct outreach and public relations. Things took a wrong turn in their lives after Mike had a sharp pain in his right flank on April 23, 2019. He woke his wife up as the pain got intense, and they got to the hospital. On getting to the hospital, he had a CT scan, which showed that he had an acute case of diverticulitis. He was later referred to Dr. Berger by his family doctor after his scan showed he had a lesion on his L1 vertebra. His spinal biopsy report revealed that he had metastatic melanoma cancer. A few months after his diagnosis and during treatment, his wife, Barb, was diagnosed with breast cancer after she felt a lump in her breast. The Cancer Couple by Mike and Barb Hutmacher discussed their experiences as cancer victims.
I have learned a lot from this book, starting with the types and stages of cancer and how they affect each individual differently. Reading this book has given me a broad knowledge of cancer experiences and what cancer victims go through. Indeed, cancer patients or victims should get all the love and support they need at this crucial stage of their lives, as that might be just what they need when they have lost all hope. This book gives you a heads-up on what to expect, possible treatments, effects of treatments, and cancer itself.
I loved Mike and Barb's love for each other when they found out that they both had cancer, especially how Barb was supportive of Mike. I also loved the fact that cancer didn't make Mike give up on God, as there were times he went to church to pray. Furthermore, I liked how the authors included pictures as illustrations of what some of their treatment procedures were like. How they acknowledged the love and support they got from friends and family is what I also liked.
I did not seem to dislike anything about this book as I was greatly impacted by their journey and experience. I also learned a lot about cancer as the authors explained and dove deeper into the disease and its types. While reading, I discovered a few errors, but that didn't disrupt my reading. I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because of my likes and remarks above.
I recommend this book to those who would like to have a wider knowledge of cancer and also to those who would like to know the experiences of cancer victims, as they would be greatly impacted.
