Review of Man Mission
[Following is a volunteer review of "Man Mission" by Eytan Uliel.]
Man Mission: Four Men, Fifteen Years, One Epic Journey by Eytan Uliel is a book that describes the adventure taken by the author and his friends around the world. It was an idea that resulted from the author's love for tasting all kinds of food while still in law school. After finishing law school and working a job he dreaded, one of his friends, Sam, called him to take him up on his idea. This was the first step taken towards the success of Man Mission.
The first trip involved taking a hike on the Harper's Pass Trail in New Zealand. Failure to plan properly resulted in unpleasant consequences such as loss of toe nails. This did not discourage the two friends. They went on to plan for the second expedition. This time they would be joined by Alec and Daniel, their other friends. This would become an annual tradition for more than a decade. Will they be able to maintain a balance between their adventures and careers? Will the annual Man Mission not cause trouble with their wives? Will this not take a toll on their marriages?
I have never imagined what it would be like to just up and go and leave everything behind while going on an adventure. I loved the themes brought out in this book and how I found the things the characters went through relatable in actual life experiences. The book opens with the author dreading where he was now, nothing compared to where he thought he would be when he was still in school. Most of us have a picture of what life after school would be like and often times it never turns out the way we planned. Friendship was a theme that was so dominant in this book. These men were friends for a long time and they helped each other out a lot, both physically and emotionally. They were there for each other through thick and thin.
These trips were not just merely adventures. Each expedition came with its lessons, lessons that would help the men do some self-reflection and grow. They also learned the importance of proper planning. I loved how the expeditions were not just getaways. These trips helped them through some of the most trying times of their lives. I loved the quotes and verses at the beginning of each mission. They were so deep I always looked forward to them. The author drafted maps of each place they visited and it helped put a picture to what I was reading about. He also put statistics at the end of each expedition to show the ground they covered and the time they took to finish.
Uliel is great at descriptions. He described their expeditions so well that at times I felt like I went on the expeditions with them just watching from a distance. He also has a great sense of humor. The book was edited exceptionally. I found no errors. It was so captivating it deserves 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend Man Mission to lovers of adventure. It could push you towards trying adventure in a different way. The amount of profanity in it would make it suitable for a mature audience.

Reading about the many places these four men visited was intriguing. I laughed with them, wowed with them, worried with them, and learned a lot from their experience. Indeed, this book says a lot about friendship. Interesting review.
