When we see something that is not familiar or comprehensible, we may feel fascinated or frightened. As human beings, we would not simply walk away from any puzzles or mysteries; we try our best to make sense of any supernatural event. In the book Star Bright by A. F. Carcirieri, Jr., we can learn about people’s reactions and thoughts in old times when they saw the planet Venus in the sky, especially during daytime, and how they tried to understand this phenomenon by linking it to something or someone.

This book contains sixteen different stories related to Venus. At first, the author shares how God created Venus and the war between God and Satan. And then he narrates about how ancient people worshipped the planet as the goddess of beauty and love and prayed to the goddess for things they desired. Later in modern times, people related Venus to some leaders, believing the planet was a symbol to accentuate how extraordinary and great these leaders were. And finally, move forward approximately one hundred years. People knew more and more about the planet and planned to build a spaceship to arrive there.

This book shares many unique and impressive stories with readers. The one about a woman who struggled and suffered from a war between Napoleon and other European monarchs made me feel how cruel and terrible a war, any war, was. We also can see how a planet can drive people crazy or offer hope to them. A girl strongly believed the planet is a goddess; she prayed day and night, and she was fanatical that the goddess selected her to be a queen. The sixteen chapters were well arranged based on a timeline, from the ancient period to modern time, showing us how people’s opinions changed through the ages. And there is no bad point about this book.

I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The author offers many interesting stories to readers and shares deep thoughts about morality, wars, beliefs, and many other important issues.
