Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, written by Matthew Tysz tells the story of a kingdom where all kinds of magic exist and is ruled by a king who is figuring out what is best for his people while staying true to his beliefs. It tells the story of a skilled mage who in his search for power, ruins and takes lives until he’s punished for his actions. It tells the story of a young man trying to find his way in a new land far from the war ridden Land of Princes, taking on the challenge of following his late uncle’s steps as a blacksmith.
It is evident that the author has lovingly crafted this story, you can really tell that this was a passion project of his and that he gave it his all throughout the writing process, everything from the origin of magic, to the characters’ motivations, to the structure of the land was made with a lot of thought given to it. Despite being the first installment of a fantasy series, at no point did I feel lost in the writing style or the world-building, it was just intricate enough to make me interested but not too much that it was info-dumping for the sake of clarity.
The parts that felt the most entertaining and charming to me were reading Galen Bray’s point of view, he is definitely the most enjoyable character, he gives off a very kind and genuine aura that makes you want to learn more about him and how he will reinvent himself now that he’s living in Magnum Caelum.
On the other hand, I must say not everything was to my liking, the biggest offender is the pacing, I had the impression that the narrative would stall at times for characters to reflect on themselves quite frequently and everything would slow down. Only after I was halfway through did I feel that it was moving forward at an appropriate speed, although after that it picked up quite well, I guess it is to be expected from the beginning of a long series, it needs to build on the groundwork. Another point related to this is the number of characters with narrations, since we’re getting to know everyone, it was a bit difficult to keep up with all of them.
Overall, it was a solid well-written and edited story, I would rate it 5 out of 5 stars. It has a very interesting magic system and universe, a broad scope in geography that will probably be explored in future books, and a lot of potential with the political intrigue, if you are a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire or The Witcher series, this might be the book for you.
