ARA Review by Andromeda Flynn of The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid by Gary Robinson was an entertaining read. There was adventure, loss, humor, and just brilliant story telling overall. It follows a teenager that learns to swallow swords to be part of the circus and adds many acts through his life with the circus. The swordswallower, Duke is a showman, an addict, and a drunk but seemed to always have a positive outlook on life. He was self sufficient and even when he fell on hard times, he used his skills to make the best of his situation. The first half of the story is only about the swordswallower. He meets Gary, a runaway teenager who made his home on Chico, where it so happens Duke also settled down. Duke is Gary's inspiration and this book is written to tell such a tale.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is well written, interesting, and makes you want to read every word. It's professionally edited, as I found no mistakes. It's one of the best books I've read this year.

The second half of the book set me off a bit as the story changed dramatically into entirely new characters. It took me a few chapters to accept the switch and enjoy the book again. I almost didn't read this book due to the title and cover. It didn't seem like it would be something I would enjoy, but looks can be deceiving. It was very enjoyable.

I enjoyed Duke's intellect and deeper interests that he shared with Gary. I'm unsure if this book is a true story or not, but it was written as if it could be and was very believable. I liked how Gary and Duke stories collided and their journey together was wonderful up until the end.

I enjoyed the end of the story and the overall warm feeling this novel leaves. It is full of positive energy and good vibes. It's truly a brilliant story.
