Review of Final Notice
Dr. Vijay Patel, a doctor and mathematician, created a health watch that predicts within 10 to 30 days when someone will die by monitoring his vitals and giving them what is known as "final notice." With this notice, he hoped people could get their affairs in order and die peacefully. But the certainty in regards to when people would die creates anxiety in some, a deep sense of purpose in others, and the desire for revenge in a few. All this can change drastically when they possess something as harmful as a gun.
Final Notice by Van Fleisher discusses the effects of knowing something important about the future, which is death. This aspect of human life, while certain, does not mean that a lot of people accept it. The readers are introduced to a variety of very compelling characters, their choices, and how their environment shaped them to make the choices that they made in their final moments. The first topic discussed is one of the most important ones nowadays: the issue of gun ownership. While the author discussed its perks, he immediately highlighted its negative effects. The book explains the complexities of creating a product, the mode of transfer of the goods to the final users, how the equipment is tested in the beta test, and lots more, which I won't bore you with.
The best part of this book is the ability of the author to create an authentic background that is almost relatable if one is close enough to the people he describes and also weave seamlessly from one character to another, be it from the perspectives of VT2 developers, law enforcement, news agencies, participants in the study, or survivors of these murders. It weaves several sub-plots together, making it hard to place it under one genre of either political policies, science fiction, or crime fiction.
I found no negative aspects of the book. It was well written and well thought out, and to the right audience, this might be a blockbuster of a book. Describing something such as death or gun ownership requires a lot of attention, which could at any point err and point back at you. The author has done an excellent job of balancing these themes.
Overall, I found the book to be an intriguing and thought-provoking read which explores the universal question that, if you only had a few days to live, what would your last act be. It also has political intrigue peaking in unexpected twists. I would like to rate the book 5 out of 5 stars . The book is professionally well edited.
I would recommend the book to readers of science fiction, politics, and crime novels. I think the book would also be good for people who can think rationally without getting put off by the dark themes of the book.
