ARA Review by PPI2015 of In It Together

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

I'm okay, but you?

Back in the 60s, a book was published titled "I'm Ok, You're Ok." This wonderfully written book, "In It Together ..." reminds me of the 60s book in many areas. The premise of both books is the same though the authors do not articulate the premise outright -- we in the West err when we say we live in a binary universe such as good-evil, real-fake, dark-light, etc. Moreover, it is wrong for us to think of me-them, we-they, and so forth. As the subtitle declares, “The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All.”

I applaud the author’s deep thinking and clarity of conviction. However, I question whether the Pollyanna bug has bitten the author. For example, the subtitle calls our common struggle beautiful, but what is beautiful about a group of people committing suicide believing they will be transported to a spaceship?

What is beautiful about the war in Ukraine, the conflict in Sudan, child abuse, and an attempt to overthrow our democracy on January 6? And then there is the chapter of the book that proclaims, “There Is No Problem of Evil.” That is a very Eastern concept that might lead to denying the damage done by misconduct and criminal behavior in high and low places.

Despite these questions, I have given the book a 5 out of 5-Star rating because reasonable people can disagree, and the author presents his arguments clearly and convincingly. Nevertheless, I am convinced that I am okay, but you?
