Morrow's Con: Opening Gambit is an intriguing novel about Morrow, a con artist who uses his judgment of human nature to scam the rich and powerful. Morrow is not a typical saint or a Robin Hood but instead works to save his friend and is open to making money en route. Morrow, taught the art of con by his mentor Edwin, views the opportunity to use his skill and vivid imagination for dreaming up the "perfect plan" with clean execution as his best motivation.

The book starts with a brief jail scene where the protagonist, Morrow, gets released and looks forward to lying low and living a peaceful life without letting his past haunt him anymore. Hence, he works as a driver for a crime boss and lives without any incidents. One fine day, his friend brings him an opportunity to run a con where he needs to retrieve a renowned painting for its rightful owner. Given his experience with small-time cons he has run in the past, he picks up this one too. Unfortunately, the outcome will either let him and his team live or lead them to their deaths. Colliding with risks, Morrow feels that this gig is not as easy as he initially thought. The book proceeds to reveal whether Morrow actually succeeds in going solo or if he has cement overshoes waiting for him.

The story wholly runs on Morrow’s point of view and puts other characters inferior to him. Even though the other characters might be of great importance to the plot, I felt the backdrop could have been developed better to give depth to Morrow as well as the other characters. I am hoping the succeeding books in this series will uncover all these characters' personal stories.

I loved the character of Morrow, his way of planning, how he treats his friends with respect, and, of course, his rivals with wit. It is full of humor and 'aha' moments in the book when Morrow navigates through the ups and downs of the gig.

Earl James does an excellent job of creating a complex and multi-dimensional character in Morrow. While Morrow's actions may be questionable, readers can empathize with his struggles and the difficult decisions he must make to survive. The author creates suspense throughout the novel, leaving readers on the edge of their seats as they follow Morrow's journey. The book has no errors and is exceptionally well-edited. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars because of how well the book has been enacted and I look forward to reading the succeeding books in the series. I recommend this book to readers of all ages looking for a witty scam where you keep rooting for the scammer.
