Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first book of Matthew Tysz’s science fiction series We are Voulhire. The book is packed with action and simultaneously tells stories of multiple cities and dilemmas. While the main character, Galen, the boy raised in the Lands of the Princes in constant war, escapes the Lands to Magnum Caelum with the help of his old uncle, another city, Hillport, suffers from the cruelty of its lords. The story is told in first-person and third-person narratives, and events take exciting turns. The last two Lords of Hillport, the city full of magic and supernatural events, Lord Orlin and Lord Meldorath, took advantage of the citizens and traumatized them, using them for experiments and personal intentions. After their cruelty, a new lord, Eldus, comes to rule the city. Though he is gentle with the citizens and tries to make the city a better place, the legends about the old lords still run people’s minds. After some time, strange events occur in the town, and no one is sure that the old Lord Meldorath is dead. So who is behind all the brutality? Is Lord Meldorath alive, and if so, does he possess the same power as before? What was the reason behind the mage Lords’ cruelty? Is Hillport in danger again?
As the reader opens the book, the first few pages are dedicated to the map of Voulhire and all the characters’ identities. Therefore, if readers forget someone’s identity, they can look them up initially. I found it helpful, as the names used by the author are not so commonly used in the modern world. The characters were well-developed, and their relations were very entertaining. Because a few things were happening simultaneously, there was always something interesting going on, which made the reading process even more enjoyable. I loved how unexpected the following events were. The story didn’t fully unfold before the end, keeping me on edge. The whole story was enthralling and well-developed. The last pages of the book also contain definitions of the words used in the book, which was very pleasant to me.
Along with all the positive points, to me, the story seemed a little scattered around. I could not quite connect the events of Hillport with Galen. The whole theme of the story was hard to understand, but I’m guessing that’s because this is the first book of the series and just an introduction to help understand the following books of the series. Also, to me, the diction used by the author seemed a little hard to understand, but it was not particularly difficult. It would also be nice if the book contained a table of contents. Other than that, there was nothing I disliked about the book, there were barely any errors I encountered, and therefore I assume that the book was professionally edited.
As I mentioned, the story was engaging and intriguing, there were almost no errors, and the characters were well-developed. I enjoyed reading this book, and the negative aspects I talked about all have their reasons or are easy to correct. For all the reasons above, I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars. I think this book deserves to be put in front of the auditorium of science fiction lovers.
As the book contains some profanity, I would suggest this book to teenagers over 16 plus who love reading stories about magic and supernatural events. I think they would enjoy this action-packed, intriguing, and captivating novel. I am sure the following books of the series will be even more exciting.
