Review of Unyielding Destiny
Unyielding Destiny tells the tales of a skilled and wisdom-filled hitman who struggles to keep his present life away from his past. Frank Morris lost his parents at eight years old and was adopted by Don Joseph Cabineri, his father's boss, until his demise. Don takes Frank home and treats him as his son, even enrolling Frank in the same school as his two daughters. Three decades pass, and Frank is at a maximum prison in Alcatraz, serving a 14-year sentence for burglary. He pretends to be on his best behavior while orchestrating a successful plan to escape prison. Once out of jail, Frank is faced with a life-changing moment, where he has to assume a new identity; he is believed dead by the authorities. The idea to change appearance is brought about by the Mafia and leader of the Cabineri crime Family, Don Cabineri. He assures Frank that he will take care of all the details, and he does.
Years later, Frank crosses paths with Scott Easten, the son of Roy Easten, who died saving Frank during the war in Korea. This was not the first encounter as they had met back in Alcatraz, where Frank was serving his time. Scott was accompanying his mother, a nurse, on official duty at Alcatraz. On their second encounter, Scott is an assistant attorney investigating and hoping to bring down the Cabineri and associated crime families. Being a senior member of the Cabineri family, Frank is still determining whether to stay loyal to his family or work with Scott, whose father saved his life. Read Unyielding Destiny to determine which path Frank chooses.
Unyielding destiny revolves around the life of Frank and gives us first-hand details on what it means to be a hitman. I loved this book because it depicted loyalty and humanity. Even though Frank was a hitman amongst others working under Don Cabineri, there existed a bond between the brothers that was unbreakable. Spiros Gratsias shows these men's vulnerability despite being viewed as heartless by society. The author further defines justice from both Frank's and Scott's points of view, leaving the reader to decide who is right.
The story starts slow and is filled with information I initially dismissed as unimportant, which became part of the background information needed to understand the characters. The author's use of the Silican language added depth to the story and gave it authenticity, which I enjoyed. Spiros's use of Silican made the characters feel like real mafias, making the story believable.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for the above reasons. Despite being put off initially, I understood why the first few chapters were slow-paced. The book is well and thoroughly edited, as I encountered only one typo, which did not affect delivery. Spiros uses vivid descriptions throughout the book, expanding the reader's imagination, which makes the story live.
I recommend this book to lovers of crime books and thrillers. I wouldn't advise any sensitive reader or young people to read Unyeilding Destiny due to the high level of profanity in the book. Descriptions of killings might also affect some readers.
