Review of Challenges of Christian Marriage in African Culture
Challenges of Christian Marriage in African Culture by Sylvester Oyeka is an educational book that explains what Christian marriage is like in African culture. It provides the difficulties Christian couples face in the African culture. In this book, the author provides the ways in which a couple can make their marriage work.
This book starts with the different definitions of marriage. Then the author proceeded to succinctly explain what marriage is like in African culture and in Christian culture. He provided the various distinctions they both have and their similarities too. He explained what marriage is like in the Igbo culture and also gave tips on how the Christian couple could adapt to African culture.
This book felt like a mini textbook to me. I learned what an African marriage was and what a Christian marriage meant. I got to see their many differences and their few similarities. I got to learn that there is no particular definition of marriage because marriage means different things to many people. I love the fact that the author included some Bible passages in this book to buttress his points. It made me understand his work much better. The author used the Igbo culture while explaining what marriage is like in African culture, and the fact that I understood what marriage is like in the Igbo culture made me understand this book so much better. The author also made references to the texts he used while writing his work. I learned about the most important thing which is needed to make any marriage work. I love the way the author explained marriage in the Igbo culture; he explained how Igbo marriage is conducted, and he even talked about kinship and its effects on Christian marriage.
I found nothing to dislike about this book. The book was well-written and also edited. The author provided references to his work, and this makes it more credible. The work was also arranged properly. The author even provided what he intends to accomplish with the publication of the book.
I found a few errors in the book. This leads me to conclude that it was professionally edited. Therefore, I rate the book five out of five stars. I didn’t take away any stars because there was no reason to do so. I gave it a full rating because of the several positive aspects I stated above. I recommend this book to Christians and people who appreciate Igbo culture.
