Catherine A. Pepe's fictitious book, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures, delves into various themes such as family, sacrifice, change, community, bullying, disability awareness, and good parenting. In this heartwarming tale, readers learn the importance of empathy and a positive outlook on change.

After being uprooted from their parents and home in Wichita due to their parents' missionary assignment in Kenya, Mary Grace and Donny are compelled to move in with their grandparents in California. Upon arrival, they are warmly welcomed by their grandparents, Grandma Cathy and Papa Steve, along with their loyal dog Krug and great-grandmother Gigi. They also encounter the "Grandma Gang," La Shana and Elizabeth, known for their knack for solving mysteries, and the eccentric Grandma Cathy. Although Mary Grace initially resists leaving her familiar surroundings, she gradually adapts to her new environment. However, a school incident jeopardizes the safety of Mary Grace, Donny, and their new friend Penelope. Seeking assistance, Mary Grace enlists the help of the Grandma Gang to unravel this new mystery.

The book left a profound impact on me with its thought-provoking messages. It effectively emphasizes the vital role of parenting in shaping a child's life. Rather than solely focusing on punishment, it explores alternative approaches that prioritize transforming the wrongdoer, thus promoting a more just society. The book skillfully underscores society's collective responsibility in raising children, emphasizing how even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact. Notably, the author adeptly portrays characters with disabilities, particularly those with Down syndrome, contributing to greater awareness and understanding. The inclusion of charming illustrations throughout the book added a delightful touch, evoking feelings of luck and joy. I commend the author for creating a diverse cast of characters, which added depth and richness to the narrative.

This book was an engrossing read that I thoroughly enjoyed, and there was nothing about it that I did not appreciate. It was evident that the author had invested a great deal of effort in crafting this exceptional work of literature. I believe it was a courageous and admirable undertaking for the author to seamlessly interweave factual and fictional elements, drawing from personal experiences.

I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars due to its profound and uplifting content. From beginning to end, it was an absolute delight to read, consistently captivating and engrossing me. The author's unwavering commitment shines through on every page of this enchanting literary work. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to young readers, educators, parents, fiction enthusiasts, and anyone who relishes solving mysteries.
