Review of Secrets of the Kashmir Valley
As the conflict changes, so do its people. War changes everything, the way people think, move, work, sleep, and so much more. This book is about the cry of Kashmir women, "All we ask for is our freedom and the right to have a life, as you do, in your Country. This movement is my life". What more is there to be said?
Secrets of the Kashmir Valley by Farhana Qazi is a nonfiction book depicting the life and situation of the people in Kashmir Valley. Kashmir is a tiny valley with nearly 86,000 square miles. The word Kashmir comes from an Indian text. Of which 'Ka' means 'water', and 'Shimir' means 'desiccated water'. Together, these phrases reflect Kashmir as a land desiccated by water. It's a beautiful place indeed, but still, filled with sorrow. This book is an oral history of Muslim women and their men and children. It is a series of stories by ordinary Kashmiris living extraordinary lives in an active conflict. It is an attempt to make these invisible women and their men known to the outside world.
We are indeed influenced by our culture, context, and capabilities. The lives of these people are extraordinary. This book brings Kashmir women's lives to the center of the conflict, putting the spotlight on them as capable, competent, and compassionate actors who deserve greater decision-making power. While reading this book, what these people go through in the hands of the Indian Army brought tears to my eyes. The fact that their voices are silenced, their cries aren't heard, and their men killed and jailed have been kept from the outside world is heartbreaking. Farhana Qazi's attempt to make their cries known is what I love about this book. I do believe we need to be the voice of the voiceless.
After I read this book, I found nothing to hate about it. The themes of love, family, friendship, terror, brutality, rape, fear, and so much more are present in this book. I'll say it takes a strong and compassionate heart to read it all without breaking down. All because the pain of these people living in Kashmir Valley is unbearable. Only with their voices heard can this oppression be stopped. For I know these people will continue to fight and protest till their lands and lives are given back to them. Support the motion by reading this book.
Finally, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I believe this book well deserves my rating. It is a book that speaks for itself. The lives of these people need to be known, and this book serves that purpose. This book is also exceptionally well edited with no typos. It's a book for strong minds, so I recommend it to lovers of nonfiction books and those who want to know more about these people and help in the movement.
