Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a remarkable science fiction fantasy novel written by Matthew Tysz. In this first book of the series, Tysz introduces a captivating realm where the natural and supernatural coexist in faith, science and magic. The story unfolds in the powerful kingdom of Voulhire, which is on the verge of a golden age. The elements of wealth, culture, and rapidly advancing technology in this world bear similarities to our own. Power and revenge take centre stage as the inhabitants of Voulhire grapple with their identities.
The story unfolds through the eyes of the protagonist initially, but as the plot progresses, a multitude of characters step into the spotlight, weaving a complex web that leaves readers questioning who the true protagonist might be. This unexpected shift in perspective challenges and reshapes our initial judgments, granting us a deeper understanding of the intricacies of the other prominent characters. Each chapter, characterized by its concise nature, bears a title that focuses on the narration of a specific character, ensuring that readers are fully immersed in their journeys. The author, Tysz, possesses a mastery of descriptive language that effortlessly transports readers into the heart of the story, evoking a sense of anticipation and curiosity with skillfully placed cliffhangers. One of the story's standout elements lies in the stark contrast between the personalities of the characters and the harmonious dynamics they create when they interact. This dynamic interplay not only adds depth and complexity to the narrative but also keeps readers engaged, eagerly awaiting each subsequent twist and turn. Moreover, the book is professionally edited, with only minor errors found.
Furthermore, Tysz's choice to employ everyday language within the story imbues it with a comforting sense of familiarity, as though the events are unfolding within our world. This relatability not only strengthens the connection between readers and the characters but also enhances the story's impact by grounding it in a reality that feels tangible and authentic. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this well-paced fantasy novel with a coherent storyline. Matthew skillfully incorporates various elements of fantasy, presenting a fictional world with detailed descriptions of locations and a map of Voulhire. The use of unique words adds to the intrigue of the story. The action-packed final portion of the book keeps the reader captivated until the end, leaving him/her eager to read the next instalment and discover more about Galen Bray's journey.
I rate this fantasy novel 5 out of 5 stars, as it is a well-written and engaging story. The author has masterfully crafted a new realm for readers to explore, and I eagerly anticipate continuing the series.
I would certainly recommend this book to science fiction and fantasy enthusiasts who would like to read war thrillers. I would not recommend this book to children under fifteen years of age due to the inclusion of profanity and violent scenes.
