Matthew Tysz's Voulhire series commences with We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, an intriguing fusion of fantasy and mystery, interweaving supernatural elements with mythological undertones. The novel delves into the enigmatic realm of magic, exploring its consequences and the relentless struggle for its acquisition. In this captivating tale spun by Matthew Tysz, the spotlight falls on Galen Bray, an ordinary young man leading a modest life in the Land of the Princes. However, upon receiving news of his uncle's untimely demise, Galen's path takes an unforeseen turn as he embarks on a transformative journey to the Kingdom of Voulhire. There, he crosses paths with Rowan, his uncle's executor, and together they embark on a series of exhilarating adventures, driven by their ambition to expand the blacksmith business. Along their arduous path, Galen uncovers the veiled realities lurking beneath the surface of Voulhire, discovering a kingdom on the brink of devastation. Menaced by the nefarious mage Meldorath and his malevolent minions, the Riva Rohavi, the fate of Voulhire hangs precariously in the balance. Additionally, the novel casts a spotlight on Wilhelm, the stalwart king of Voulhire, as he confronts an impending battle, fighting tooth and nail to protect his realm from the encroaching darkness personified by Meldorath. Tysz's literary creation mesmerizes readers with its intricate exploration of magic, the thirst for power, and the profound sacrifices they demand. The narrative intricately weaves together a tapestry of a riveting plot, vividly drawn characters, and an exquisitely envisioned world, ensuring readers' complete immersion in its pages.
Based on the meticulous organization of this book, it is evident that the author is a true master of their craft, skillfully employing accessible language. The craftsmanship of this book is exceptional, and I thoroughly relished the intricacies of its plot. It truly engrossed me. Despite being set in the enchanting realm of the Middle Ages, infused with magic and otherworldly elements, I found myself effortlessly immersing myself in each scene. The author's vivid descriptions were nothing short of impeccable, and the inclusion of a meticulously crafted map of Voulhire brought the world to life, fostering a sense of believability and aiding in visualization. Characterization is another remarkable aspect that captivated me in this book. Each character possessed an independent spirit, with their own specific roles and well-defined personalities.
I found great delight in the supplementary materials provided within the book, such as the map and glossary. Among the ensemble cast, Rowan, the executor of Galen's uncle, stood out as my personal favorite. He exuded an air of elegance, amusement, and affability. It seemed as though he possessed a natural talent for charming women. What set him apart was his willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. Galen marveled at Rowan's consistent willingness to offer additional support beyond the scope of his responsibilities. To Galen, it seemed almost too good to be true, and he couldn't help but wonder about Rowan's underlying motives. However, Rowan assured him that his actions were purely a part of the service he provided and that the compensation received was well-deserved.
However, the author's utilization of unfamiliar vocabulary throughout the book necessitated frequent visits to the glossary at the book's conclusion to decipher the intended meanings. This repetitive process hindered the reading pace, resulting in weariness and a diminished level of engagement. Setting aside this drawback, the book provides a highly gratifying and profound reading experience. Notably, the book's exceptional editing stands out, as I failed to detect any errors. Hence, I wholeheartedly bestow a 5 out of 5 star rating upon We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz. This rating is well justified by the author's skill in ensuring that the book possesses qualities that engross the reader.
