Review: Streets of Broken Hearts by Sydney Bristow

Post by Mimi Jazman »

This is a story of a girl that have no money to further her study. With a father who couldn't afford to give her all the love she needs, Justine Bryce is forced to pick a dark path in her life. That is how she ended up as a jewel thief. This book tells us what happened to Justin after she stopped being a thief. The aftermath of choosing the wrong way to live her life.

This book is full of useful additional knowledge since the story takes place in 1927. The book makes you think and it also provide you with so many new perspectives. It approaches the topic of science, psychology and sociology all at the same time. With the appearance of a psychopath and a black man, I realized that the author is trying to bring out more than just excitement throughout the book.

Furthermore, the author also gives every character a background story. First, I thought it will confuse the reader but somehow, it did not confuse me and it gives the book more stories. Since this is only the first book, I wonder if this is how the author attempts to create a bond between the characters and the readers. Because it surely will.

Although the book suggested that it is an action packed book, you will be surprised to see how much the writing can be related to you. The writing as a whole is very simple and easy to understand with some new words that you will rarely everywhere else. The presence of beautiful and relatable quotes is such a surprise.

The author explains everything sufficiently. There is nothing such as too much detailings that it tends to hurt your brain. No. This is a mystery/crime book that you will not have much difficulty to get into. It is in a good pace, no draggy parts at all. The beginning is a bit slow but the pace picked up towards the end, which is good. It does have a momentum to it and everything is well-resolved at the end. You know what happened to everyone by the end of the book.

Now, let's get to the characters. Personally, I do not have any emotional attachment to any of them. It was just fine. They are all mysterious and you will be curious to know them all. It is fun to get to know them. All of the are very well-developed. You can see the changes of whatever happening inside them throughout the whole book. You can see them changing in just one book! That is so good because that means, the characters are not dull or slow.

The book made me curse. Twice. It has very good plot twist and obviously, I didn't see all those twists coming. I usually can expect some things, but in this book, there's nothing as I expected. The plot twists does not up to the point where it blows my mind, but, that mostly because the lack of attachment I felt towards the characters. If I can relate and understand the characters more, I believe the twists will affect me more.

Since this is only the first book in the series, I believe I couldn't yet rate this book as a 5-star book. But that does not mean the book is no fun at all. Personally, I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery and action. It is a good read.
