Farmer’s Beau’s Farm by Kathleen Geiger is the story of Kailey Kitten’s life growing up on a farm run by Farmer Beau and his wife Bamma. Kailey first gets to the farm with 5 other kittens, but as they grow, the other kittens leave the farm. Only once a single kitten remains does Farmer Beau and Bamma name her and create for her a spot within the barn to call her own. Kailey befriends Sammy Bunny who then comes to live on the farm with her. Farmer Beau and Bamma one day decide to take in a new, much more unique animal (one better suited for a zoo than a farm!) Kailey and Sammy must learn to accept a new and different friend, while their new barn mate must also adapt to an unexpected living situation.

The central themes of this story are perfect for a children’s book. It touches on the fear of unfamiliar situations, inclusion, and friendship. I love the way the author navigates Sammy and Kailey’s feelings and acceptance of their new friend. The book is long enough to have a solid story and message, but short enough to keep the attention of most small children. There were no negatives that I saw to this book.

I would easily rate Farmer Beau’s Farm 5 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed both the story and the illustrations of this book. The illustrations are realistic-looking cartoon style and have very good detail. The pages with text on them appear in a white box outlined in black set against a colored background, which gives the whole book a nice look.

This book would be well-suited for preschoolers through early to mid range readers, or even younger children who may have graduated from board books to ones a bit longer. The story contains a spattering of words that may be hard for a beginning reader to pronounce on their own, but for the most part, the words are simple and would be easy for a young one to get through. My 8 year old reads at a third grade level and he had no problems reading through this book with me. It was very enjoyable.
