Donny and Mary Grace Miller live in Wichita, Kansas, with their parents. Mary Grace is a ten-year-old in elementary school, and Donny is her brother; he has been diagnosed with Down syndrome. Mr. Miller serves at St. James Episcopal Church as the priest and rector. One day, Mr. and Mrs. Miller inform their children that they have been sent to Africa on a mission and that the children will have to go to California to stay with their grandparents.

Being a positive and happy child, Donny sees no problem with this. However, Mary Grace is not excited to leave her friends and city behind. She is even more upset that her parents will not be with her. Would her parents convince her to go to California? What adventures await the children in California? How would they cope with their grandmother, who is a member of the Grandma Gang? What is the Grandma Gang?

Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures is a splendid book. One positive aspect of the book is that it is written by an author with actual experience of what living with a person with Down syndrome looks like. This makes it relatable and reassuring. I loved that Catherine Anne Pepe decided to make this book a fun read and not just a book dwelling on the struggles of people with disabilities. Here, we see the amazing qualities Donny possesses. We are made to understand the importance of a loving family and the impact family has on a person with a disability. I also loved how the author focused on the emotions and thoughts of both Mary Grace and Donny; both characters were fully explored.

The author's writing style was also unique; it felt like I was listening to a story. Some scenes in the book are funny because Mary Grace constantly makes different jokes. I appreciate that I did not find any errors in the book. It improved my view of the book as it showed the effort the author put into it. In addition, this book discusses several things; it was intriguing how the author explained bullying and the various forms of bullying that can occur. Readers can learn how to deal with bullying by reading this book. I can personally assure you that there is more to the book than I am able to write in my review. Children and adults looking for a relaxing and adventurous read will appreciate this book. Therefore, I would gladly recommend this book to them.

I found nothing to dislike about this book. Hence, I rate it five out of five stars. Since I only found positive aspects in the book and it contained no errors, I cannot give it a lower rating.
