This is a review of the audiobook services provided by the Audiobooks website, and not of a particular audiobook.
One of the current downsides to audiobooks in general is the availability of titles. I had approached the Audiobooks website selection with a few generally known books in mind (although not best sellers), but they weren’t available.
In my search for a different audiobook, I enjoyed a very nice function of the website that offers separate ratings for the book and the narrator. I had an experience once where I loved the book while reading it, and so borrowed the audiobook for my husband and I to listen to for a long road trip. We quickly heard the narrator assume a bad fake accent and use a screechy falsetto for the female character, which made listening to the book miserable. In my selection of audiobook, I was quite happy to have a chance to avoid that situation thanks to the separate rating system.
Another nice feature is that more than the top two or three audiobook reviews are shown at a time, and all of the the reviews are very short and succinct. I found this convenient, since prior to purchasing any book online I generally read the first ten reviews or so if they are available, to make sure the number of stars isn’t only a reflection of reviews by the author’s relatives and friends.
A free audiobook was offered on the website, which was a nice way to get introduced to audiobooks if one has not done many before. However, I had to enter my billing information and am automatically set up for a $14.95 monthly subscription to get an audiobook each month if I don’t cancel. If not for doing this review, that would have been such a deterrent that I would have not signed up. Also, the idea of doing a monthly subscription for audiobooks doesn’t sound useful to me - I would more readily purchase the books on demand rather than waiting another month to get another book.
In general, I found the Audiobooks website easy to use as a whole, and really liked the app to listen to the book on my phone, even without an internet or data connection. It was also easy to stop the book as needed, as the pause/play functions were displayed on the lock screen of my phone.
I rate the use of Audiobooks as 3 out of 4 stars. I removed a star due to the billing methods used by the website.
