Some depressing social commentary (Atomised, Houllebecq)

Post by grunt »

firstly, hello all! i decided it a good idea to begin reading more frequently (my english teacher may have had some influence) so i thought i'd google 'book forum' and here i am. i recently read Michel Houllebecq's Atomised and i thoroughly enjoyed it. it's set in the second half of the 20th century in which two half-brothers grow up, detached from the world around them (the sexual revolution is described in great detail). one brother attempts to force himself into this world, all the while feeling inadequate for it, while the other detaches himself completely. Houllebecq suggests that the slackening of social mores during the time would eventually lead humanity to its demise.

i don't know if i'm being too specific, but something slightly related would be ok (i don't read much so anything you recommend would probably wow me)
thanks for your help!
