Official Review: Dragon Singer-Anne Mccaffrey

Post by aparsons »

I have been reading Anne McCaffrey for as long as I can remember. The very first book I read from her was called Dragon Singer. This is a small novel set right after the events of the first trilogy and it really stuck with me. Menolly is the name is the main character and all she wants to do is sing and make music. However, women are not allowed to become Harpers by trade. She ends up getting caught outside during Thread fall and dug herself into a cave to survive. In the process, she discovered a nest of fire lizards and few them to keep them from going out into Threadfall. It always seemed like the coolest thing to me, that you can just feed an animal and it sticks with you for life. It was a fantasy of mine to own a little dragon. Menolly continues her journey through two other books, eventually entering the Harper hold. Her personality is well rounded and authentic, McCaffrey writes her grief, joy and tenacity very well. She has a real personality, and it is a wonderful backdrop for the larger, more epic scale happening with the dragons.

Has anyone else read this book, or the rest of the Pern series?

I have read a few of the Pern books. I enjoy them and want to read the rest of them. The first one I read was Dragon Heart which is actually by Todd McCaffrey. It is a great story, but I don't think he is as good as a writer as his mother.

I agree with you. I also think they started having to reach a little more for topics and conflicts within the story. I think with Robinson's death, everything just fell flat after that.
