The Eye of Ra: A New Dawn By Brain J. Davies caught my interest because of its title. This is a sci-fi offering. Mythology draws me in, and I enjoy anything based on Egyptian philosophy or spiritualism. The introduction of the astral plane provided another exciting and unexpected aspect. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the creativity, good plot, and interesting twist.

Joshua is a special child, born with a unique ability. The Eye of Ra: A New Dawn introduces the five year old child's unexpected gifts early in the story. Due to a set of circumstances, which seems nothing more than a convenient and contrived literary devise, Mary becomes the child’s protector and early teacher. Because of her background, she has access to others with the skill to foster the child’s training and development. As Joshua matures, his ability and enlightenment seems to grow. Those of special aptitude and insight seek him out.

Mary is my favorite character, as the stabilizing force in the child’s life, and in much of the story. I liked Anil when he was first introduced, but his character did not develop to the point that I resonated with him. And, I love the idea of the introduction of Chloe. Her presences adds a new dimension to the plot. I find chapter seven (7) to be one of my favorite. I like the combination of the emerging adolescent and the emerging psychic.

Although the story failed to engage me in the first two chapters, in chapter three the writing style changed from totally telling and allowed me to suspend disbelief as it offered some vivid details. The Eye of Ra: A New Dawn features twists and turns in this solid plot with good research.

The lengthy paragraphs, the prologue and chapters one and two, in particular, with huge sections of telling, made the reading laborious and awkward for me. At times I needed to go back and re-read to discern which character was speaking. The abundance of ‘ly adverbs’ in this fiction novel threw me out of the story at every turn as my editor’s sense kicked into play. The poorly edited text was off-putting and interfered with the presentation of a good story. There are misspellings and numerous word confusion (knew for new). I would love to see this story re-written after a professional edit. I would certainly read it again.
