I thoroughly enjoyed Purpose by Gina Bianchini. I give it a 5 out of 5. I have been interested in creating an engaged community for a long time. This book helped me see that it is possible. Cleverly and professionally written, Gina explains why having a community – the right kind of community – is essential. I love a book in which I am given the exact steps to accomplish a goal. The idea of workshopping is a great way to get started.

The author takes us through her story to show how her ideas for the book were born. I loved all the story examples. While I’m usually a “get to the point” sort of reader, the stories were a great gateway for the topic of how to build a community.

I have struggled with this topic for years. It’s as if the author can read my mind. I always think things like, “This idea is a bust. Nobody wants to be part of my community.” And she showed me that this is a common concern. She also shows how to overcome this concern.

I’ve also always labored with finding my ideal customer. Gina first explains who your ideal member is and then gives instructions on how to create an ideal member story, which makes it so easy to figure out how to build your community.

There are several exercises she asks you to complete to solidify your purpose, your community, and what the future looks like for both of them. I found the Big Purpose exercise the most enlightening. She gives the precise steps to use for exactly how to complete these exercises. Anyone who follows these steps will be successful in determining what kind of a community to set up and how to have the best chance to make it successful.

I am excited about my future community for myself and the future members of that community. I know I have so much to offer the right community, and the author taught me how to figure out the goals for my community and how to set up that community.

My recommendation is to read this book once through, then read it again, stopping to do the exercises in each chapter.
