ARA Review by SerenadeNeko13 of Lets Talk! a story of autism and friendship

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Summary:

This book was about a little girl making a new friend who has autism. These two young girls were very excited to play together and have fun, but there is a difficulty for the main character, Harper, to communicate properly with her new friend. She really wants to be able to do so, and she asks her mom to help. Her mom explains to her what autism is and how it can affect a child as well as the perception of others. She decides to help Harper figure out how to get over the obstacles of communication with her new friend Emma.

Characters:

Harper is a charismatic and polite child with a lot of energy and hopeful demeanor in the way that she approaches situations. She looks forward to making friends and making her friendships broaden even within the realm of obstacles and with others. She works her hardest to be a good friend and do what's best to be helpful.

Emma is a very energetic child who has autism and it affects the way that she interacts and communicates with others around her. She is very open to friendship and playing with others, and she welcomes the thought of new opportunities to play with her new friends and attempts to communicate better very well.

Enjoyment:

I enjoyed the book a great deal. It can be difficult for others to understand the needs of a neurodivergent child and it is helpful to understand that they may have difficulty doing things that others do not. I appreciated the approach that was shown throughout the book and it was a wonderful way to approach diversity and autism in general.

5/5

Originality:

I personally have not seen many children's books within this realm of neurodivergent differences, so this was an easy pick for me to want to review. As someone who grew up within the realms of a neurodivergent and autistic mind, myself, I found it a refreshing contrast to much of the media associated with the topic.

Recommendation:

I would recommend this to anyone with a child, or anyone looking for a diverse book to add to their repertoire of books. It is something that can be passed on to others and deserves to be shown.
