Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures is a book about love, bullying, mystery solving, and forgiveness. Donny was a little boy with Down syndrome. As you know, people with this condition are special. That fact does not stop others from hating and treating them as less than human. Donny unknowingly faced this when he moved to California with Mary Grace, his big sister. At first, she got a note calling her brother an unspeakable name. It later escalated to threats directed at her should the truth of what was going on get out. Mary Grace knew the threats and notes would not stop until the culprit was exposed. So, donning her detective hat and grabbing her magnifying glass, she began her quest to find the culprit. Will she be successful? How will this affect Donny at the end of the day?

Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures was written by Catherine A. Pepe. The book started on a strong note when tragedy threatened to strike at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas. I loved that the author added so much tension and suspense at the start. This tactic ensured that I was captivated and made me subconsciously expect more surprises from the story. I am happy to say my expectations were not cut short. The drama that came with the notes sent to Mary Grace and the possibilities that followed in my mind kept me on the edge of my seat.

What I like most about the book is that the author made it known that we should never brush off children's emotions. Children may be young, but they are humans too. We should give them time to breathe, sort out their thoughts and feelings, and help them understand why we do what we do. That played out perfectly when Mary Grace was confronted with the fact that her parents would be traveling to Kenya for missionary work and would stay there for two years. Despite being just a child, I liked that her feelings and emotions about the whole thing were not brushed aside. We should learn to treat children better.

Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures was written perfectly. I am not exaggerating when I say this. It had zero errors, which means it was exceptionally edited. The moral lessons were vital and well-heard by me. For example, forgiveness is a crucial lesson in the book. The story showed me that it may be difficult to let the thoughts of the horrible things done to us go, but if we want to live happier lives, we must learn to forgive. The suspense in the story was also intense, and I loved that. Donny's extraordinary love for penguins warmed my heart too. I have absolutely zero negative comments to make about this book. I disliked nothing about Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures. That is why I give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures taught me many things. It showed me that children ought to be respected as much as adults. It made me understand why forgiveness is important. It also made me understand the challenges that come with being different, like in Donny's case. I recommend this book to anyone who would love to understand the challenges some children with Down syndrome face. I also recommend it to young readers from six to twelve who love stories about solving mysteries.
