Review of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
If you’re looking for a book that’s suspenseful, darkly witty, romantic, and overall terrifying, then this is the book for you. The book follows a girl with the pseudonym of Mara Dyer, who has had some pretty strange and sinister things happen to her since the death of her best friend, her boyfriend, and his sister. After all, she was also in the accident that killed them. She was the only survivor of a building collapse to the local abandoned mental institution- which she was never supposed to be in. She has no idea why she was there, or what happened…only that she wants to leave the town and forget about the grief centered around her childhood best friend Rachel. What makes it worse is that six months prior, the girls had tampered with an Ouija board. After asking how Rachel would die to the board, it responds with Mara.
So, Mara and her family move from their home in Rhode Island down to Florida, hoping to heal Mara from her trauma. There, she meets a ridiculously arrogant British boy named Noah Shaw…who is also ridiculously cute. He’s got messy curls of brown hair, bright eyes, and untidy clothes. If that’s not enough to make your heart throb over him, he LOVES animals and believes Mara to be the most gorgeous girl in the world. Every girl DREAMS of this man.
There are people in Florida who Mara can’t stand…so horribly that she wishes that they would die. In these instances, she’d picture their deaths in her mind. Then, peculiarly, those she’d wished death upon would instantly turn up dead…in EXACTLY the way she’d imagined. And someone is watching Mara…she can feel it. There’s been so many strange happenings in her life that that’s all that makes sense. Or maybe it’s the ghosts of those she outlived…maybe she’s hallucinating. Everyone already believes Mara to be crazy, and she is starting to think so too. That is, until she finds out Noah experiences unique abilities as well…the only difference is that she kills, he heals.
They both know someone is after Mara, but how do they find him when everyone believes Mara’s too crazy to be left alone? How do they help those that are in danger? She’s constantly put on new medications and sent to psychiatric help. Why do the two have these powers? Read to find out.
This book and its siblings really kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. So many compelling characters-though many who are villainous are NOT lovable-, it’s written really well, there’s twists in almost every chapter, and you are really able to feel with Mara everything that happens around her. Strongly suggest reading the whole series (though I have not yet finished book 3). If you have read the Shatter Me series and enjoyed it, you’ll really like this trilogy as well. An easy 5/5.
