Review of McDowell
Dr. Hiram McDowell is a prominent surgeon affiliated with the prestigious International College of Surgeons and an avid mountaineer. Driven by ambition, he excels in all his endeavors. While leading a life of opulence and traversing the globe, Dr. McDowell's self-centeredness diminishes his concern for those around him. His arrogance is matched only by his tendency to engage in extramarital affairs, despite being married with children. He once left a colleague to die on one of their mountaineering trips.
Such a man as Hiram is bound to gather some enemies for himself, especially as he made some promises he couldn't keep just to get to the top. As Dr. McDowell ascends the stairway to success, he inadvertently creates a nemesis whose sole purpose is to seek revenge for an unfulfilled promise. His fame attracts the attention of the media, eager to showcase his remarkable achievements. Little does he know that his world is about to take a sharp turn. What fate will the turn of events bring to Dr. Hiram McDowell?
I love that this book highlighted the effect of the absence of a parent or parents in the lives of the children. In a world devoid of Hiram's presence, those left behind are left to traverse life's winding paths without the guiding hand of a parent. Hiram's persona, marked by a distinct absence of morality, utilizes others as mere pawns in his grand scheme, never bothering to consider the emotional toll his actions may exact upon them. Little does he realize that his callousness will eventually catch up to him as the repercussions of his heartless behavior begin to manifest.
"McDowell" By William H. Coles pulsates with relentless energy, leaving no room for respite between pivotal moments. Amidst the unfolding tale, there are occasional instances that leave one's jaw hanging in disbelief—like the fates of Sophie and Jeremy. Such shocking turns in the plot compelled me to revisit those passages, savoring the impact they had on my senses.
The downfall of Hiram, once a towering figure, arrives swiftly and unforgivingly, leaving no trace of his former glory. Yet, amidst the wreckage of his shattered existence, there exists a certain satisfaction in witnessing the poetic justice that befalls him. Strangely enough, despite the litany of abhorrent deeds committed, I found myself inexplicably rooting for this deeply flawed individual. It was as if a glimmer of hope clung to the recesses of my being, yearning for his redemption.
There was nothing I disliked about this book, and I did not encounter any errors while reading it. For this reason, I am rating it 5 out of 5 stars. I would highly recommend this book to readers who like books that hint at parenthood. It is important to note that the book contains a significant amount of profanity, which should be taken into consideration before delving into its pages.
