Review of Madame Pommery
We are in the 21st century, but we can agree that some rigid conventions and societal expectations still define our lives. You can therefore imagine the situation in the 19th century, particularly in the 1860s. Rebecca Rosenberg explores what it meant to defy the odds during those periods. In her book, Madame Pommery, Rebecca tells the story of resilience and defiance that built a dynasty in the champagne-making business.
Widowed at forty, Madame Pommery inherited her husband's manufacturing and retail wine business. The business was making losses from the debts her husband owed suppliers. Simply put, it was a failing business, and Madame Pommery was responsible for getting it back on track. She decides to quit wine-making and get into champagne-making through conviction. She needs to learn about the new venture and has to depend on houses established in the business for that information. This is a real challenge, but probably the tiniest one she'll have to face. People are dismissive and not at all supportive of her ambitions. Moreover, the political instability in her country at that time directly affected her business and her family. Will her determination and willpower be enough to create her intended dynasty? Get the answers to this question by picking and reading this beautiful book by Rebecca Rosenberg.
I should straight away say that I enjoyed reading this book. The book transported me into another century with its skillful storytelling and vivid descriptions. The narrations, especially around the activities during the war, were exquisite. The aura of war was brought out quite well in the characters' panic, stress levels, and fleeting humanity. The portrayal of leadership and authority around that period was also quite accurate.
I also loved the message that transcended from every page of this writing. The unraveling of resilience and determination like no other. Madam Pommery's life taught us what it means to be knocked down and get up, dust yourself, and keep going. I also learned a number of things about the wine-making process and got a glimpse of good decision-making in business. The author's language was simple, friendly, and easy to comprehend. The conversations in the book also made it livelier and more engaging. There is nothing negative I can report about this book.
I gladly award the book a perfect rating of five out of five stars. It is well-written, packed with lessons, and exceptionally well-edited. If you are a fan of historical fiction and are interested in stories of resilience, this is definitely the book for you.
