I give The Days Are Wicked by A.N. Shaw 3 out of 4 stars. It is very well written, but has a few errors in spelling and miswording. I found myself falling “in like” with many characters, but as soon as they were in the picture they left. This is a very short and fast read with only 71 pages on my kindle, so I finished in less than two days.

In the beginning The Days Are Wicked feels like a realistic fiction story, but near the middle it is a little more fantasy. This story is haunting yet beautiful simultaneously. At first it was a little off-putting that the story was so realistic and serious then turned into a fantasy, but it grew on me after a couple of chapters.

Summary: A boy named Jonathan lives in poverty after a Great War. He never seems to fit in no matter where he goes. He is always bullied and thought of as an outsider. He feels as though he is lost and searching for something bigger. Right when Jonathan thinks everything will be okay, something happens to crush his hopes and dreams of living a normal life. All he wants is a life out of poverty and without being bullied. Along his journey he meets a couple of new friends, discovers he is something bigger than us all, and his family has been keeping a huge secret. This left the powerful message that there is something out there for everyone, no matter how big problems may seem. Throughout the story Jonathan fascinated me. Although not everyone lives the way he does, many people can relate to the feeling of being alone and not being able to “find yourself” at such a young age.

The Days Are Wicked Is extremely easy to read and follow. I was left wandering what will happen next and would love to read a sequel one day. The book has an intriguing dark feeling to it, but also a feeling of hope. It is refreshing to feel both at the same time. A very vivid picture is painted throughout the entire book. I had never heard of A.N. Shaw previously, but I feel that they have big potential. If there were not so many intriguing characters that disappear.

The Days Are Wicked would have easily made four stars in my book. It did bother me that these people had the perfect picture of them painted and I could easily imagine them in my head, but they only lasted a few chapters, or sometimes even less.
