Tick by Allison Rose was futuristic novel that pulls in many scientific fiction elements. Tick is set in Los Angeles where Josephine Bristol, the main character, lives. Los Angeles is portrayed as a futuristic city run by the business giant called Future Tech. Future Tech government, jobs, and education supplier. Jo, as Josephine likes to be called, is a normal teenager with a somewhat interesting life. Jo is a student at the local trade school and has a passion for art. Or is Jo what she seems?

Jo has a tick, as she likes to call it, and spends her time avoiding the drones and brain doctors of Future Tech. Jo’s “tick” gives her vivid visions of killing the people she is physically around. At first Jo’s visions just cause her to space out for a few minutes and this gets her in trouble in her classes. But, Jo’s visions are starting to escalate and she is starting to act out some of the things that are happening in her visions. Jo is terrified that she will actually kill someone and ruin her dreams of becoming an artist like her father. Will she finally kill someone? How will Jo stop the visions and avoid the brain doctors?

While reading Tick I really fell in love with the character Jo! I found myself rooting for her when she got herself in to sticky situations and mentally scolding her when she made horrible decisions. Rose does a fantastic job of humanizing Jo, and her feelings, even though her situations are far fetched for our present day lives.

I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. Rose does a great job making you feel a part of Jo’s life and her struggles. You really feel like you are apart of Jo’s visions and you feel what she is feeling as she struggles with her decisions throughout the book. I did feel like Rose does draw out the story a bit. I felt in some parts of the book that the story was stagnate on a specific part of the story and did not see where the storyline was meant to progress. I still look forward to the rest of Jo’s story in the next books Rose plans for the Tick series.

This book will appeal to the reader who enjoys a mysterious story that has adventure and futuristic elements. Readers of these genres will enjoy how Rose uses futuristic elements to take you through Jo’s adventurous life. These readers will be chomping at the bit for the next book in the Tick series. Those readers who enjoy a realistic fiction story that is a believable story will not find Tick and enjoyable read. I believe they will think that the science fiction and futuristic elements are too far fetched to find Tick enjoyable.
