Review of The Winning Equation
[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Winning Equation" by K.D.Sparks.]
The Winning Equation by K.D.Sparks is about determination, sacrifice, and looking at the bigger picture. Alex has a knack for sports and can stay glued to the television, watching his favorite soccer team. He, however, has an unhealthy habit of eating not-so-healthy foods. When an opening comes to join a soccer team, he grabs the opportunity with gusto.
With the help of Coach Johnson, he appreciates the need to replace his diet with much healthier snacks. In the field, Alex is not as talented as the rest, but the coach encourages him to do his best. With courage and resilience, Alex becomes a captain and an inspiration to his teammates. Join Alex in his journey as a sportsperson.
I loved how Alex inspired other team members with his words and actions. One boy joined their team and received different treatment because he came from another country. Alex made everyone see they were all unique and talented in their way.
In addition, I loved Coach Maya and her optimism toward the boys. Every mistake was a lesson learned. The fact that the coach was a lady made it more interesting. Further, the theme of teamwork dominated the novel, where they had to work together to win. Alex balanced sports, school, and home stuff. His involvement with his grandmother and parents was laudable.
There were a few loose ends that counted as dislikes. One, when Coach Maya came into play, we weren't told why Johnson left. Further, there was an issue in Alex's home. However, the author does not address it. Plus, I had a problem with chapter 12. I wasn't sure whether the beginning page was a story being recounted or just a missing punctuation mark. I reread it severally to comprehend it. These issues are the reason I can't give it a full rating. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
I found a few errors. The novel is well edited. I recommend it to children interested in sports, specifically soccer.

What an inspiration Alex is? A proof that passion beats talent. Further, his passion seems to influence others making him a role model and most importantly, a captain.
