Gina Bianchini’s Purpose: Design A Community and Change Your Life Book Review
Purpose: Design A Community and Change Your Life Book by the entrepreneur Gina Bianchini is a self-help book where the author offers a step-by-step guide to finding purpose and achieving it with ease. The author is successful in declaring the information and arranging them. The author emphasizes that each person must have a purpose and each one’s purpose contains multiple ways of exploring it. She starts by narrating her familial life, the power of community and the importance of technology. Then she writes on how to find purpose by exposing “The Hero’s Journey” theory by Joseph Campbell and by making a future plan of what she expects for herself to be in the future by implementing some steps. Finally, she writes on how to build a community and making members of community participate and get benefits.

The author shares information about her family. Her familial life was warm and her family was committed to building a joyful community. Although that they did not have a huge salary as a family due to her parents being teachers, Gina enjoyed the support she had through the community her parents had built. The author focuses on the core community that includes family and close acquaintances. Family and close friends determine values, principles and personality traits of their offspring Gina is a family person due to her emphasis and interest in her familial life and community. She mentions her familial life and community with eagerness and warmth. Her emphasis on community and core community that includes family and close friends is surely key to building a business that focuses on finding purpose through community and the implementation of technology. Family and close friends determine values, principles and personality traits of their offspring. It is interesting that she is focusing on community because participating in a community offers emotional support and encourages the person to pursue self-development. Communities offer skill development by participating with the members of the community and getting their feedback. Additionally, communicating with people from different backgrounds and perspectives helps broadening perspectives and encourages self-growth.

The author moves to mentioning the creation of apple computers and social networks at the end of nineties and how websites spread fast. By being enthusiastic about the technological boom, Gina shares her creation of a successful company. Her company’s website is based on building communities by subscribing. Her company, Ning, depended on the essential connection between purpose, community and technology. She led a course that she felt unease about at first but later she found enthusiasm due to the attendees of her course who motivated her. Gina seems to be a tech-enthusiast and a tech- savvy which helps her narrate and write about the role of technology. Her book would have been different if she was not interested in technology. Technology helps her communicate with members of communities to achieve her purpose and build strong communities.

The author declares “The Hero’s Journey” that was written by Joseph Campbell to find one’s purpose. She writes the basic premises of the theory. The character in the light of this theory follows the call of an adventure. During the adventure, meets a mentor follows that inspires and helps. Later, he meets allies and enemies. What follows is going through a face of self-discovery. Finally, the character finds his/her purpose. The author expresses that everyone finds purpose through sharing one’s light by Maslow’s network of needs that entails the principles of love, esteem, learning, aesthetic, self-actualization and transcendence. The author narrates that it is crucial for everyone to examine and evaluate the story of their lives to find their purpose by examining their upbringing, experiences in life, greatest achievements and the people that they are pulled towards to help. She emphasizes that each person must pay attention to recurring themes and noticing the connections between them. Gina expresses that a thirty- day morning ritual must be implemented to find purpose. The ritual’s components include removing distractions like phone, making the favorite beverage, having a blank paper and practicing the stream of consciousness process by writing everything that comes to mind and thinking about what is possible in the future to do and achieve. In my point of view, Even in Joseph Campbell’s theory and Maslow’s theory, there are premises and parts that are based on realistic lenses of life. The premises are real when examined because they show that everyone goes through these stages of the premises. The author provides a novel perspective on finding one’s purpose by exposing the truths that entail that one must recall recurring themes and events that happened in life and notice the connections meaning the similarities between them and in which details they events differ. She is helping us notice that recurring themes are keys to understand and realize our true purpose.

Gina shares that everyone must have a future template that contains what one aspires to do in the future. This future template includes a before and after contrast of what one can do to stand out. The next part of the future template contains the turning point which entails the shift made to move from before to after. And how the turning point made one evolve and improve. Gina shares her future story by emphasizing that everyone must write his own future story that entails what one aims to achieve in the future. Gina’s future story is where everybody in the communities communicates through implementing enthusiasm, authenticity and care for each other. Future communities will less care about materialism and focus on happiness. The future communities have leaders that have new social ideas. Then she expresses that she must ask herself the following questions to help find purpose in her life. First, she must find her core community and ask herself about whom can help her in her purpose. Second, she must find out what she can do to herself to be energized and healthy to fulfill her purpose. It is interesting that the author encourages every seeker of purpose to aspire to dream about the future and write about what we want to achieve in the future. She encourages us to see ourselves in advance being in the future and to see what we will achieve there. The author’s idea is novel and mind-blowing. It makes us as readers very eager to write about our futuristic aspirations and be interested in achieving our ambitions. However, her future story looks unrealistic because social relations are distancing apart nowadays and in this age and materialism is made so important and emphasis on spending money is increasing. This is a negative point in her book because it is hard to control expectations about future in an age where social relations are weakening and consumerism is growing.

In the second part of the book, Gina expresses the questions to be asked if one wants to create a community. The questions are: Who will need her service the most now? What results they will get from participating? What kind of activities the participates would want to undertake? What new things they will get as members to be able to be punctual parts of the community? How she is going to make their experience exciting and awesome. In my view, offering promotional sales of the services that the author provides from time to time is a wonderful way for encouraging her viewers to participate and be punctual in her platform. Gina formulates what is to be her ideal member in her community. She expresses that she must fall in love with their opportunity, falling in love with what it takes for them to realize their full potential, falling in love with presenting what makes them quickly navigate a transition, falling in love with their hardships and their hindrances and falling in love with their fears and misconceptions. In my view, creating an intimate experience with the members of her community through getting to know them and being like friends with them helps her validate her position as a guide that offers guidance for them to find their purpose and find the strength to face challenges. The author writes that a magical first experience of a member has three ingredients. The ingredients are purpose, connection and surprise. A member’s longing for a purpose is what makes them participate in communities by sharing the advantages with each other. Connection is by making a member view the other members if they are local to their area, have the same profession or even just want to be involved in similar topics. The element of surprise by offering a service to them that they admire and offering options for them to choose from. Finally, Gina proposes that participants in a community must experience quests and collabs that makes them acquire a tangible skill or a new discovery about themselves. She adds that collaborations or collabs show participants how to find each other and create something that unites them with each other. Gina makes the members also eager to explore each other and to be social with each other by connecting with each other by finding common ground that unites them. Quests are created to bring members of communities close to each other and foster results they aspire to achieve.

To conclude, the author is clear and informative in her exposure of knowledge and experiences in addressing purpose and ways to find it with ease. Her focus on family and core community is essential in finding purpose because it aids in achieving purpose through being connected and being present with each other. The author is right on her focus on the importance of technology in bringing members of communities close to each other to achieve their purpose by making herself present through her company and website. Sharing theories like “The Hero’s journey” by Joseph Campbell provides a method that inspires readers to explore their purpose with eagerness. Suggesting writing a future story is a wonderful way to build a futuristic vivid image for everyone to find and see themselves a decade or two decades in advance where their ideas and aspirations are achieved and acknowledged. The author’s interest in being communicative and friends with each member of her community that she wants to help is an effective way that guarantees results to be found by each the author and the member. The author’s wealth of knowledge in declaring ways for finding purpose makes my mind spin and makes me eager to find more ways to find purpose myself. The book is easy to read and free from errors that is why I give the author five stars rating because she offers multiple ways and methods and her style is expansive in offering information.
