Beginning with a gripping prologue, Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren, takes the reader on a wild ride by including characters from earth, heaven, and hell. Beginning the novel with the story of Benjamin Poe, a father plagued with a ne'er-do-well son and an unfaithful wife, McFarren addresses real-world family issues such as marital strife, lack of communication, and hidden truths. The readers feel for Poe as he struggles to reach his distant son while trying to repair his disintegrating marriage. The story quickly takes an ominous turn as dark suspicions surround Poe’s son regarding a fatal fire, and a mysterious, sinister stranger comes to town causing fear, death and destruction. It is revealed that the stranger, Crighton, is a demon from hell who causes trauma and misery for Poe’s family and other members of the community. In this first section of the novel, Poe struggles with his own inner demons and literal ones.
Part Two of the novel delves into Crighton’s life, giving readers insight into his character which, surprisingly, shows him to be multi-dimensional, not just an evil demon from the depths of hell. As the story progresses, we see him as someone who is capable of intense feelings, including anger, passion, empathy and love. Crighton’s devotion to his demon mother, Acadia, and his fascination with an angel make him an intriguing, unpredictable, and fascinating individual. In addition to vivid characters, McFarren paints an interesting and unique picture of hell and the demons who inhabit it. Who would expect that hell comes complete with physicians, handbags, and teeth-brushing demons?
This is much more than a book about good versus evil. Throughout the novel, the reader sees how the complexities of love and the dark secrets of the past impact all relationships. The concept of souls dominates the tale, from the soulless to lost souls to soulmates.
