Rooftop Sunsets and Cocktails by Alexa Fernandez

Rooftop Sunsets and Cocktails is a young adult book sharing the story of Desiree and her two closest friends George and Olivia. Desiree is a young woman who is still figuring out what she wants to do with life. At the start of the books she acted very immature and was extremely selfish. She is left by her former fiancé for acting as such and she falls into a depression that lasts until one crazy day when she gets a phone call stating Seth, the former fiancé, had been in a wreck. Seth has no recollection of the past few months and believes them to still be engaged and happy. She plays along with this scheme while his current girlfriend is out of the country. Doing this causes her to become even more heart broken and depressed when he regains his memory. She falls into a whole that only her friends are able to pull her out of. Through out the book she goes through several different problems that teach her lessons and help her to mature. It is after all of her struggles that she is able to open herself up to find the perfect man for her.

This story is written in third person and has 260 pages. It is a quick read. I really enjoyed following the short romance the main character Desiree had. I also enjoyed seeing her character grow over time. Something I noticed that she had in common with her friends is that they all preferred the life of acting and performance. Although George is a doctor he desired to follow that path for a long time but decided to fulfill his fathers hopes and follow in his footsteps.

I felt that the story line was great. It was easy to follow and stay focused on. This is a common thing seen in Young Adult books. I could tell that the author, Alexa Fernandez, was similar with the area surrounding New York City. She was able to describe what life for women who live in the area is like through Desiree’s character.

Something I did not like were the grammatical errors through out the book. It really distracted me but I was able to finish the book. With there being so many errors I would have to give the book a 3 out of 4. Other than the errors I also found that there were two or three random page breaks in a few of the chapters. If the format and grammar were corrected I feel that this book would be an easy 4 star.
